Have you noticed how many national publications lately have featured environmental issues on their front covers? Just in the last week, the New York Times Magazine and Mother Jones have had cover stories on “Green Geopolitics” and “Who Cares that Half of all Life on Earth will be Extinct by 2100”, respectively. If you’re interested in reading either of these articles, my unbiased opinion is that the Mother Jones piece is far superior. Thomas Friedman (who wrote the Green Geopolitics article) has been writing the same column for 5 years, with the argument amounting to: We need to burn less fossil fuels and reduce our dependence on Middle East Oil – duh.
In the past several months, Vanity Fair, Time Magazine, U.S. News and World Report and many other publications have dressed themselves up in green as well. As major corporations rush to wrap themselves in this season’s hot new color, I just hope this is more than a fad, and that the adage, “clothes make the man” really holds. As in, I hope we are not witnessing mass greenwashing, but a true paradigm shift in the public consciousness, and in the behavior and business models of corporations and governments.
I hope that we will soon all be wearing green inside and out.
